Donte and NAW almost shot us into a win in the pivotal game 4 that ultimately sank us. NAW scored 23 and shot 9/15 5-8 from three, and Donte scored 21 and shot 7/11 5-8 from three in a 2 point loss.

clutch big time. there's recency bias, but i think this was the biggest make in Donte's career here.

Almost. Key word almost. Doesn’t make up the 13 crappy games he played before that in the playoffs.

Him and Naz have lots to prove in the postseason l.

You still blaming the bench for losing last year!?

I’m not blaming the loss to OKC on the bench at all. It was a team meltdown. Similar to Dallas the year before.

But numbers don’t lie and DDV had a putrid playoffs and Naz had his 2nd straight disappointing playoffs.

His deal is guaranteed thru next season - which he will likely miss most of. So it's a can we can kick down the road a bit - and then, he'll be looking at a new deal after rehabbing from a tough injury. I think we can likely keep both.

He's going to be 30 next year. I wouldn't go more than two years - I wonder if anyone else would.

Dame at 35 years old with the same injury got 3/42 million with the 3rd year being a player option to get paid to sit this season, have one guaranteed year, and one year as an option. Granted there wasn't a lot of teams with cap space this past summer to offer anything, and he's still getting a lot of money from Milwaukee.

Jace frederick
@JaceFrederick
Anthony Edwards is the best player. But, as multiple people noted last night postgame, Donte DiVincenzo is Minnesota’s heart and soul. Which is why it crushed the Wolves to see such an unjust injury.
Spoiler:
‘He’s our guy. We love him’: Timberwolves devasted by Donte DiVincenzo’s season-ending injury
“We’re going to really miss him,” Finch said. “It’s really hard”

Image

By Jace Frederick

His voice cracked and he began to choke up. Timberwolves coach Chris Finch struggled to put into words how he felt about Donte DiVincenzo’s season-ending injury in Game 4 against Denver on Saturday.

DiVincenzo attempted to chase down the rebound off his own missed shot fewer than two minutes into the Timberwolves’ 112-96 victory in Game 4 at Target Center. But as he attempted to get going, he looked back at where he started to see who might have kicked him. No one was there, and the Wolves’ spark plug fell to the floor with a non-contact injury.

He shook off Jaden McDaniels’ attempt to lift the him to his feet and immediately waved trainers over.

“You could just see the look in his eye when it happened,” Finch said. “You kind of knew.”

DiVincenzo tore his Achilles’ tendon and will miss the rest of the season.

“I feel completely devastated for Donte,” Finch said. “He’s the heart and soul of so many things that we do.”

It was a cruel twist of fate for a man who was just one of 18 NBA players to play in all 82 regular-season games this season. He left his soul on the floor in each of those affairs. Minnesota’s effort was inconsistent this season, but DiVincenzo’s wasn’t. He was the example of intensity his teammates could aspire to match.

“Donte is probably the heart (of our team),” Wolves forward Naz Reid said. “People don’t really notice it, but he plays so hard.”

They started to seem to pay attention in these playoffs. After leading the Wolves in net rating throughout the regular season, DiVincenzo paced Minnesota in plus-minus in each of the club’s first three playoff games. It’s hard to miss the one guy who’s constantly flying all over the floor in a time of year where effort doesn’t go unappreciated.

If there was a winning play to be made, DiVincenzo would deliver.

“He literally put his body on the floor for this team,” Wolves guard Ayo Dosunmu said.

DiVincenzo noted after Game 3 that playoff basketball is “something you dream of as a kid,” and he was making the most of his latest opportunity — right up until disaster struck.

“When you go to war with somebody every night and you watch somebody compete the way Donte competes, prepares himself. … He’s just the ultimate competitor,” said Wolves forward Julius Randle, who was also DiVincenzo’s teammate in New York. “To see that happen to him was tough. It’s tough. It was just hard to watch.

“(As) somebody that’s been through some serious injuries myself, I understand the road he has coming up. But I know he’ll be fine. I know he’ll battle through it, and he’ll come back better for it. Especially at this point in the season, it’s tough to see that happen.”

As trainers helped DiVincenzo off the floor, the guard made his way up to his head coach, who embraced the 29-year-old.

Yes, DiVincenzo’s absence hurts Minnesota’s prospects of making a deep playoff push. While Anthony Edwards (knee) could potentially return later this postseason, DiVincenzo’s season is over, and his 2026-27 campaign is in jeopardy.

There are major financial implications possibly at play with the injury for DiVincenzo, who has just one more year remaining on his contract with the Wolves. But the tender moment between coach and player was about far more than any of that.

“We just love him,” Finch said. “From the moment he has gotten here, he has kind of bounced around a little bit. I think he came here with some scar tissue, but he’s our guy. We love him.

“From day one, I knew he had that type of moxie and toughness that I love in a player. You can see that everywhere he has ever been. So, we’re going to really miss him. It’s really hard.”

If he's interested in a NAW type of deal (4 for 60), I would have interest assuming he looks fine a year from now. I would guess he's back next March at some point.. Tatum tore his May 12, was back early March... if Donte can return mid march next year that would be fantastic for the playoff stretch. If he's willing to take a more team friendly extension while injured, that would be fine with me too. A slight raise from what he's making now knowing Ayo is going to be the starter over him going forward.

He was our best plus minus player and the only one to be above +300 this year, and when he went down, he was leading in that category in the playoffs. He really busted his ass in the off-season last year and it showed. Prayers for what sounds to be a great dude and teammate. He deserves good things.

I was just starting to like him. He was a huge disappointment last year. Well wishes to the DD family. Going to be a long road to a potential return to the game.

Finch mentioned how well of a season he had and how well he did stepping in as the starting pg. He had a great year... and at his salary it was a HUGE bargain.

If we don't extend Donte, I wonder if he would even return next season if he able to like Tatum was. Is it better for him to return with no contract guarantees to show what he can do, or is it better that he just sits and makes sure he doesn't re-injure it?

Dame, Tatum and Hali all went down last season within a 57 day period with the same injury DDV has - Dame Apr 27, Tatum May 12 and Hali June 22. I know it's a certain doc and a new technique that worked on Tatum, but even so - his return is pretty remarkable. Every injury is different, every body is different. I'm not sure how far along Dame and Hali are in their rehabs, but neither came back for the regular season like Tatum did when he returned to play on Mar 6. I am not under any assumption that we'll see Donte next year - likely not in the regular season, but then if he's back - how do you reintegrate a guy for the playoffs who has been in the mix all season?

Well Dame is old, Halis was 2months later than DD and had zero incentive to come back since Indy was so bad vs Tatum knowing they had a good shot at a playoff run. But yeah Still a big stretch both for his body and athleticism and confidence in pushing off and for the team to integrate next season.

There is a distinct possibility that we never see Donte play in a Wolves jersey again. He’s an UFA in 27-28

Very possible that he just ends up being salary filler in part of a bigger trade.

Good point… I think they need to make a splash in the offseason. This team as is isn’t winning a championship. They need to make a move for Giannis IMO

Who's going to give up much for a broken player who won't play for at least half the season?

Agreed. Plus he is about to be 30. There is no telling if he will ever be the same player after that type of injury.

He won’t play here again imo and he has no value now.
