Anyone ever realize how all music genres are connected?

Post by bubu dubu. »

Sitting here drunk at 2:40 AM. Was watching a TV show which somehow got me looking up Elvis videos on youtube...but, the show I was watching had nothing to do with Elvis...

Anyway, I'm youtubing Elvis "only fools rush in..." then I watch about 4 or 5 Elvis videos...I'm not even a big fan of Elvis. All of a sudden I'm watching Johnny Cash videos because I watched a video where Cash and Elvis are together, and then watching those videos somehow leads me to watching Fiona Apple videos because she did a song with Cash. Now, somehow, I'm watching Amy Winehouse....

Heavy rock and metal came out of the blues and classical . Wrap your head around that.

All popular musical movements came from Louis Armstrong.

Whatever you are on with this post I want some because you must be smoking some strong shit to make this statement. Enlighten us to why LA is more important than the Beatles?

Lol, I didn't say that. There is a documentary which tracks back all the musical movements of the last 100 years or so, and where the influences came from. It all seems to lead back to Louis Armstrong. Remember, the Beatles were inspired by a lot of other artists like Chuck Berry and Elvis. Hell, even Zappa's Freak Out! is considered part of the inspiration for St Peppers. It's not about what was more important, the question was about how all music genres are connected.

It's true. West End Blues is considered one of the most, if not, the most important song in the history of recorded music. And it's all about what Louis Armstrong's trumpet does in the first 15 seconds.

Those 15 seconds were a musical epiphany. It starts as a singular drop of water into a pond but the ripples of that drop are still being felt today.

No, most of the Beatles, Rolling Stones and the British Invasion were based on American Blues. Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, etc.

Mate, I don't understand what you are trying to argue? Did I say that those bands weren't influenced by American Blues? Muddy Waters had a huge impact, I probably should have mentioned him to begin with; but that is not to say those I listed didn't play a part as well. This thread was about the connectivity of music, no?

So where is the connection to popular American music? I say it begins with irving Berlin and Frank Sinatra. Muddy Waters, BB king , Robert Johnson were the Rock n Roll connection. can we agree on that?

Jazz and Blues roughly originated in the same time frame at the end of the 19th century. The Blues was formed from spirituals and work songs. While Jazz was the intertwining between Black folk songs and European classical and ragtime music.

Both out of the deep south. Proto blues became the Delta Blues. While in New Orleans, you would hear New Orleans Jazz or Dixieland Jazz.

The blues has a much more hazy beginning than jazz, which makes it harder to pin down some of the true originators and what could be considered blues music. While musicians like Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Martin came out of Storyville which had kind of spawned jazz music.

Yeah, pretty neat. Music is weird. It's all connected. Even the psycho shoegaze bubblegum tween dreams j new jack pop superior hardcore death symphonic baroque acid rock the kids are all into these days can be traced back to humble origins. :coolio:

here's a jimmie rodgers song from 1930. blues, country, jazz and gangsta all in one piece. btw, that's louis armstrong on trumpet and lil hardin armstrong on piano. maybe it was just music back then, and the genres came in later to help record store employees organize their stock.

Blues had much more impact than jazz ever will. Jazz is a bi product of an inept blues product.

But think about musical influence now. Where the radio is out of fashion. It's almost as easy to grow up listening to Sun Ra than it is to Taylor Swift because it's all at your fingertips.

That's very strange and different than we all grew up but that's a change the internet has brought us. I think that's pretty exciting.

How about this. Iron Maiden, biggest heavy metal band of all time, never got any mainstream radio play yet they bucked the system and were the icons they became. Tell me one other band to accomplish what they did?

In terms of popularity? The Grateful Dead come to mind. Never had one hit song and hardly ever played on the radio at all, yet they are very widely regarded and revered.

Tool uses Indian music scales that Armstrong also used.

Google Antonio Xavier Vaz. He's an Indian jazz player. His nickname was Chic.

These scales existed prior to Louis tho. Thousands of years prior.

Anyway, Tool also uses rock rhythms, and those can be traced back to Louis.

No no, sorry, my comment was in relation to bands that have made it huge without air time. I made the original statement about Louis Armstrong which upset a few chaps.

Will look up Antonio Xavier Vaz though!

They were niche following. How many albums did the Greatful Dead sell compared to Iron Maiden? If Iron Maiden was a niche group they were the biggest of all time.
