This is my thought as well....people are whispering Brooklyn is leading the Durant sweepstakes, but two weeks ago it was a lock that he was to the Knicks. All based off what he does. NY has a ton of money and has a very high chance of missing out on every top FA and most of the next tier.Style wrote: ↑Sat Jun 22, 2019 10:28 pm A little late to the party here. Busy weekend.
Re: Johnny Athletic’s needle mover tweet: I believe it. Rosas doesn’t strike me as a used car salesmen type in the realm of some former MN honchos like Kahn and Tim Brewster. Rosas said he was going to be aggressive in the draft and he was exactly that in moving up.
Now when he says he sees a pathway to DLo, I take him at his word. I believe he has a trade lined up for Wiggins going into cap space. Just a hunch. It seems to be the easiest scenario that would give him enough confidence to publicly claim a path to a likely max FA contract. I think we’ll get DLo if the Nets get their two FAs. That’s the “path”... the Nets need to close on the FAs and then we’ll ship Wigs to sign DLo. Maybe stretch Teague/G, if needed, to make the dollars match.
The Nets continued to shed salary on draft night making me believe they still believe they’ll be getting two max FAs. Russell becomes irrelevant to them making him UFA.
I see froobs throwing out 10-15% chance estimates about the chances of signing DLo. I think it’s much higher. 50-50. If the Nets get Irving/Durant, we’re getting DLo. I have faith that Rosas has a plan in place to create the space, he just needs the Nets to renounce DLo. He wouldn’t go on record if he couldn’t make the space.
He doesn’t strike me as a guy who over promises and under delivers. He’s ready. C’mon KD, head to Brooklyn!
I'm the Froob that threw out the 10-15% chance thing. Obviously, I pulled that number out of my butthole. But let me explain.Style wrote: ↑Sat Jun 22, 2019 10:28 pm A little late to the party here. Busy weekend.

I see the moving parts that all need to move correctly for us as this:
First and foremost, Russell has to want to come here above any other realistic option. If he decides he wants to go back to LA, we're out. If he wants to go to a big market, we're out. If he wants to play with some other friend of his besides KAT, we're out. It's possible that he does want to come here. I'm not one of those guys who thinks that every pro athlete hates Minnesota all the time. Some do, some don't. No idea about Russell. Has he said anything? I know KAT has said some things and the Wolves let the rumor fly that they have that path, etc. But anything from Russell? He (or his agent) are probably too smart to say anything one way or the other. No sense losing negotiating leverage.
Second, the Nets have to land 2 guys that they like better than Russell. I'm not sure that happens and if it doesn't, remember Russell is a RFA so they can match and keep him and there's nothing we can do even if we clear the space and sign him to an offer sheet. I suppose they might let him walk if they only land one guy and it's Kyrie. Would they want to lock a Kyrie/Russell backcourt in long-term? I don't think that's a winning combo... but maybe.
Third, we have to clear the cap space. I'm assuming Russell will get a max of near-max deal. As I said before, I don't think stretching Dieng and Teague alone will get you enough space. The other option is the move Wiggins for cap space. So, ignoring any other trade components, let's just say a straight up Wiggins for cap space move, would require us to find a team with $27.5M in cap space. According to Sportrac, the following teams fit that bill: New Orleans, Boston, Indiana, Dallas, LAC, Philly, Sacramento, NYK, and Brooklyn. Most of those teams only have room if they renouce the rights to their own FAs, which most probably won't want to do (not for Wiggins anyway).
Let's break these teams down:
New Orleans: Only has the space if they renounce a lot of their players. I think they'll keep Julius Randle and of course their rookies (that will eat up $15M or so of space). I don't think they'll have enough left and don't think they're in position to want Wiggins.
Boston: Likely going to resign Rozier, but they'll probably renounce Horford and Irving. They might have the space to take on Wiggins, but I doubt they want to with Tatum and Brown on their wings and both needing big raises soon. How much sense does Tatum, Brown, and Wiggins all on massive contracts make moving forward?
Indiana: Would have barely enough space ($32M) if they renounced everyone. Would they do that and be cap strapped and talent thin for Wiggins?
Dallas: They probably want to keep Porzingas and if they do, they can't afford Wiggins. They're not really an option.
LAC: They could be an option if they renounce everyone, but they're shooting much higher than Wiggins. Their space is for Kawhi and maybe Horford. Much more desirable players than Andrew.
Philly: Again, their cap space is a mirage. They have 4 guys under contract from last season. With their cap holds, they're almost $40M over the cap. Are they going to let Butler, Harris, and Redick all walk to get Andrew Wiggins? I suppose if all those guys walk and the 6ers are left holding the bag, maybe they'll be desperate enough to try, but I doubt that.
Sacramento: Here is the team that people tend to bring up with considering a Wiggins for cap space scenario. They too have a lot of cap holds, but it's tied up in bums like Harrison Barnes, Alec Burks, Kosta Koufos, and Willie Cauley-Stein (seriously, they have $80M in cap holds for those 4 guys). I could see them renouncing all those guys, giving them almost $60M in cap space. Maybe they'd do it. Do they like Wiggins? This could happen, but if they don't like him or aren't sold that he still has upside, why would they squander that cap space resource on him?
NYK: I think this is also possible. If they strike out on all the big names (they're the Knicks, it's what they do), I could see them panicking and getting Wiggins. They'd have to renounce DeAndre Jordan. I think they plan to do that anyway.
Brooklyn: Why bother with the 3rd team? Maybe just a straight up sign-and-trade? Well, they'd have to strike out on the big-name FAs. If they do get the big-name FAs, then they renounce Russell and tie up their cap space with their new acquisitions and can't help us with Wiggins. If they don't get those guys, they probably just keep Russell. Remember, he's a RFA. So I don't think they help us at all.
So I think the only teams that could/would take on Wiggins are Sacramento and NYK, if they miss out on the big names. And I have no idea if Sacramento would want to take on Wiggins, even if they could.
So we need Russell to want to come here, we need the Nets to find better uses for their cap than Russell, and we need to find a taker for Wiggins. None of these things are individually beyond the realm of possibility, but I find the odds of all three of them happening for us to be slim. That's why I pulled the 10-15% number out of my rectum.
But maybe Rosas has a little magic up his sleeve or something. Who knows?
Nice thought out response. I appreciate all of the research into the other teams’ cap pictures. It definitely makes me question my 50-50% number that I too pulled out of my rectum.Beef Supreme wrote: ↑Sat Jun 22, 2019 11:21 pmI'm the Froob that threw out the 10-15% chance thing. Solid post. Realistic viewpoint. I still just don't see any team wanting to take on Wiggins contract. Too many years left on that deal. We are stuck with him. Plus, I'm not sold on D'Angelo Russell either. I sure as hell wouldn't want to pay him a max contract. They gambled and lost with Butler. This team needs to suck for the next few years, and hope they hit a home run in the draft.Beef Supreme wrote: ↑Sat Jun 22, 2019 11:21 pmI'm the Froob that threw out the 10-15% chance thing.
Who knows?
Hoping the Knicks gonna Knick.
Maybe my sunglasses are a bit too tinted right now, but I really believe Rosas combined with all of the DLo/instagram stuff makes us a contender for him. Even despite your well described barriers.
Lastly, thanks. Thanks for the research and nice response. You are a part of what makes this forum so great and leaps and bounds above other Wolves themed message boards!
I think so too. Russell has salvaged his career from bust status and the proverbial dustbin. For that he deserves credit. But to be max-worthy, I think he needs to take another step. Right now he’s still kind of a chucker, high volume guy. Maybe he’ll take that step and we’ll be happy to have him, even at the max. Maybe not and we’ll be stuck with a “Wiggins-lite” problem. I have no idea if he’ll take that step or not.Small Hands wrote: ↑Sun Jun 23, 2019 8:35 amSolid post.

Wiggins ($27M), Teague ($19M), &/or Dieng ($16M) are your options assuming RoCo ($11M) is off the table.
A look at the teams with space to absorb Wiggins, & to me, only SAC stands out - regardless, such a tough deal to make.
Teague alone isn’t going to get you there - therefore, it may become a dump of both Teague & Dieng while taking back some long-term salary (around $10M; assuming DLo will be around $25M per).
A nice write-up, but you may be over reliant on Wiggins being the one traded.Beef Supreme wrote: ↑Sat Jun 22, 2019 11:21 pmI'm the Froob that threw out the 10-15% chance thing. Covington, Teague & renouncing Tyus' cap hold would free up $37M to get the Wolves $30M under the cap (they are currently $7M over).
Moving Cov ($11M) should not be hard & bring back assets (FRP).
Then the pick acquired for Cov is used to entice a team to take Teague ($19M). Teague is still a useful player and several teams could use him as a stopgap for a year.
This leaves the Wolves with
c KAT/Dieng
pf ???, Dieng, KBD, Reid
sf Wigs/Reynolds/Culver
sg Okogie/Culver/Nowell
pg DLO, ???
My "Butthole" estimate of all this happening is still only 15-20%.
